In 1971 the Hotel and Catering Institute(1949) and the Institutional Management Association (1938) amalgamated to form the Hotel and Catering Industry Management Association. Later in 1971 the name was changed to Hotel & Catering International Management Association. This was done to reflect the international image that the association had gathered over the years with international membership.
Membership spans the entire hospitality industry. It is the only International recognised hospitality organisation where members are the individuals ratherthan companies.
The HCIMA is represented in 18 countries besides Malta.
In Malta the HCIMA has been present since 1968 with the first memberships. However, it was only in 1984 that the local membership was raised to an international branch status. Twenty years later we are now having our own statute and are discussing with the parent association a more autonomous way of functioning and managing our own affairs.
In 2007 the name of the association was changed

Following an indepth study of the local scenario we have come to the conclusion to start offering 2 types of membership: A local membership and an international membership.
Institute of Hospitality Fully quallified management employees can apply to the international association and participate in all the activities and benefits of the Institute of Hospitality and even have designatory letter to show their grade of professionalism.
Malta Association of Hospitality Executives We have been feeling that there was a gap in reaching out to many executives working in the Hospitality industry. We felt that there was a need to cater for those employees who for a reason or other do not wish to join the international association but would be more then willing to join a local association that would cater more to their specific needs. To be able to do this we have established a new association called the Malta Association of Hospitality Executives. The main scope of this association is to further the professionalism of these executives through education and retraining. Membership with the MAHE is open to all Management and Supervisory employees (from Head of Department level upward) working in the Hospitality, Leisure and Travel industries. Members will be given preference and reduced rates in any activity organised by the association. See the Benefits section of this web site to see other benefits you get when joining We invite you to have a look at the two options and then choose the one that suites you best in your quest of professional development.
